Pumpkins!
Please remember to send a pillowcase or strong bag to school on Monday if your learner will be bringing a pumpkin home.

Parents - if you pick up your child’s pumpkin during the school day on Monday, please let Mrs. Mirek know.  We want to make sure everyone who signs up receives their pumpkin.

Precautions for a safe return to Cushing by Thursday, October 16 would also be a good idea. Carved pumpkins can be set on the grass by the Front Lobby doors.

All Cushing’s pumpkins have been claimed.  However, if you would like to purchase your own pumpkin to carve and have on display, you’re more than welcome to.

Directions for Participants

  1. On the BACK side of your pumpkin, please write the number 5 with a Sharpie Marker.
    * If our school number is NOT on the pumpkin, they cannot guarantee that the pumpkin will be placed by the Cushing group properly

  2. DO NOT cut off the top of the pumpkin.

  3. ON THE BOTTOM of the pumpkin, please cut a 2 inch by 2 inch diameter circle.

  4. Carve/Decorate as desired.

  5. Return to Cushing by Thursday, October 16.

  6. Come to Halloween in Delafield on Saturday, 18th. Business Trick or Treat is from 5-7pm with Grand Pumpkin Illumination at 7:15. Come find your pumpkin and enjoy the festivities.

Decathlon T-Shirts
Please hold onto your Decathlon t-shirt for the rest of the school year.  We often ask students to wear their Decathlon t-shirts throughout the year for Field Trips and Off Campus Events to make it easier to locate our Cushing Stars.

Wear Green on October 22 for Phelen-McDermid Syndrome Awareness Day

Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Awareness Day

On Tuesday, October 22nd, we will celebrate Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Awareness Day at Cushing by wearing green. Phelan-McDermid Syndrome is a rare genetic condition that involves chromosome 22, and can make learning, talking, and growing look a little different for some people. It’s extra special for us to recognize this day because someone in our own Cushing community has Phelan-McDermid Syndrome.

When we wear green, we show kindness, care, and support for our classmates, friends, and families—both here at Cushing and all around the world.

So don’t forget: wear green on October 22nd to show your support!

2025 DECATHLON - OCTOBER 8

Decathlon

We had another AMAZING Decathlon event with fantastic weather on Wednesday!

A HUGE thank you to Andrea Mihalovich, Jen Szerenyi, Alicia Ploeger, Katie Wilson & Megan Stevens for spearheading our event. A special shout out to all of our volunteers, sponsors and St. John’s Northwestern Academy  that makes this day possible!

We have surpassed our goal and raised $23,245 all in thanks to our generous families and community partners who donated to support our Cushing Stars ⭐

THANK YOU!

BOOK FAIR

Get ready—the Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! This is a great opportunity to build your child’s home library with new books they’ll dive into again and again.

The easiest way to let your child shop the Fair independently is by creating an eWallet. It’s easy to set up and easy for others to add funds.

Create an eWallet, and you’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to Share the Fair - the giving program that supports students at our school who need help buying books. Consider participating so that no child leaves the Fair empty-handed!

Here’s everything else you need to know about the Book Fair:

Dates:

October 28th: 9am to 4pm
October 29th: 9am to 4pm
October 30th: 11am to 7pm (open during conferences)

Location:
The Cushing Activity Center

For full details, and to create an eWallet, visit our school’s Book Fair homepage:
https://www.scholastic.com/bf/cushingelementaryschool2

More than ever, we need to get students reading. Studies prove* that children with more books at home have higher-level reading skills, and attain more years of education overall.

Volunteer

Lastly, this is a great opportunity to be a Book Fair volunteer ! When you give your time, it helps make our Fair an unforgettable reading experience where every purchase benefits our school directly.

Happy reading!

VOLUNTEERS

🌟 Calling All Parents & Guardians! 🌟

Our PTO is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to lead some important committees that make a big difference in our school community.

No experience needed, just a willingness to jump in and help! Leading a committee is a fun, rewarding way to connect with other families, support our staff, and directly impact our children’s school experience.

Our existing committee leads have created great planning documents and have teams in place which will make for an easy transition to a new committee lead.  Better yet - join with a friend and co-lead a committee!

Below are a few important events that need support:

  • Winter Event

  • Book Fair
