MESSAGE FROM MRS. RACH

It’s hard to believe that we have one month of school behind us! We have been busy learning, enjoying field trips and appreciating guest speakers. As you know, we are working to provide families updates around our school goals and related action plans. Our communications goal for the 2023-24 school year is to improve communication around student progress, with a focus on giving parents specific guidance on how to support their child(ren)'s learning at home. In doing so, we hope to see a significant increase in positive responses on the parent School Perceptions Survey in this particular area. Some of the action steps we are taking towards this goal include:

  • Developing and following a K-5, district-wide communication plan.

  • Utilizing varying communication tools and formats to communicate updates and student progress with families including newsletters, Seesaw, conferences and other methods.

  • Evaluating myView resources to determine what can be shared with families, including progress updates, unit information, and individual student updates.

Our collective goal is to provide parents with targeted information to support their child(ren)'s learning at home and improve communication about student progress. We welcome and appreciate parent feedback around this goal throughout the year.

Pumpkins!
Please remember to send a pillowcase or strong bag to school on Monday if your learner will be bringing a pumpkin home.

Parents - if you pick up your child’s pumpkin during the school day on Monday, please let Mrs. Mirek know.  We want to make sure everyone who signed up to get a pumpkin receives theirs.

Precautions for a safe return to Cushing by Thursday, October 19 would also be a good idea. Carved pumpkins can be set on the grass by the Front Lobby doors.

All Cushing’s pumpkins have been claimed.  However, if you would like to purchase your own pumpkin to carve and have on display, you’re more than welcome to.

Directions for Participants

  1. On the BACK side of your pumpkin, please write the number 5 with a Sharpie Marker.
    * If our school number is NOT on the pumpkin, they cannot guarantee that the pumpkin will be placed by the Cushing group properly!

  2. DO NOT cut off the top of the pumpkin.

  3. ON THE BOTTOM of the pumpkin, please cut a 2 inch by 2 inch diameter circle.

  4. Carve/Decorate as desired.

  5. Return to Cushing by Thursday, October 19th.

  6. Come to Halloween in Delafield on Saturday, October 21st. Business Trick or Treat is from 5-7pm with Grand Pumpkin Illumination at dusk. Come find your pumpkin and enjoy the festivities.

Menu Update
Walking Tacos are on the menu for Tuesday, October 17th.  Cool Ranch will be the chip flavor, which is different from the Original flavor we normally get.

Yearbooks
If you didn’t order a yearbook during Great Start Conferences - not to worry!  The “store” will be open through March 1, 2024. Click HERE to place your order.

Decathlon T-Shirts
Please hold onto your Decathlon t-shirt for the rest of the school year.  We often ask students to wear their Decathlon t-shirts throughout the year for Field Trips and Off Campus Events to make it easier to locate our Cushing Stars.

Buddy Classes at Cushing
We are planning a school-wide buddy activity for October involving painting rocks. We are reaching out to kindly ask for donations from our Amazon Wishlist to support this upcoming buddy class activity.

Fall Spirit Day - Tuesday, October 31
Wear Black & Orange or dress up as your favorite character from a book. For the safety of our students, masks and/or pretend weapons are not allowed.

A Message from our Library Media Center
As you know, this year one of our school goals focuses on building a respectful school community.  We kickstarted the year by talking about what respectful behavior looks like in different areas at Cushing. Mrs. Klatt also talked to all Cushing students about what it means to be respectful while students are online.  The expectation at Cushing is that students are using their devices at approved times and that they are only on the websites that the teacher has told them to go on.

As a district, we feel it is so important to develop these skills at an early age that we have incorporated them into our behavior plan.  If students go on their devices without permission or are on websites other than the ones instructed to go on, it will result in an Office Discipline Referral. When students misuse technology or disregard a teacher's instructions, it not only demonstrates disrespect but also represents a misuse of technology. We are asking for your support as we teach your child(ren) respect and digital safety.

The saying, “Little kids little problems, big kids big problems” helps to put this in perspective.  We know that mistakes are a part of the learning process; we want them to learn respect and digital safety at a young age so that when they are more independent, mistakes don’t turn into big problems.

These rules can be used at home as well.  You should have conversations with your child about appropriate times and places to go online and safe websites.  A sample Family Media Agreement can be found HERE. In a world increasingly dominated by digital interactions, it is crucial that we instill in our students the values of respect and responsible digital behavior from an early age. We’re thankful for your support and partnership.

In partnership,
Mrs. Rach and Mrs. Klatt

STUDENT SERVICES UPDATE

TIER 1 SUPPORT

In our last newsletter update, we shared that we would be continuing the discussion of Multi-Level Systems of Support (MLSS). Today, we will want to share specific information about Tier 1 support.

Tier 1 support refers to the first level of a multi-tiered system of support designed to promote positive behavior and academic growth at Cushing. Tier 1 support is universal and applies to all students within a school. The primary goal of these supports is to establish a foundation of proactive strategies and practices that promote positive behavior. We also have Tier 1 support for academics, which focuses on providing high-quality, research-based instruction and support to the entire student population to ensure that learners receive effective and adequate instruction to meet grade-level expectations.

DINE FOR CUSHING: MOD PIZZA - OCTOBER 18

Decathlon is our ONE, big fundraiser, and we are so excited that we surpassed our goal this year! We have opted to keep small, passive fundraising opportunities (i.e. Dine for Cushing) that don't require any "asks" of family and friends and are mainly focused on community building with the bonus of a small amount of money going back to Cushing Elementary. Dine for Cushing is a great opportunity for an easy weekday meal while hanging out with other Cushing Stars! We're grateful that local businesses offer a space to do that while also supporting our school.
