MESSAGE FROM MRS. RACH

Hello Cushing Families!

It’s been a great week here at Cushing! Lately, we’ve been focusing on developing a growth mindset. We have a growth mindset when we believe in ourselves, work through challenges, and take on new learning with confidence through the power of “yet.” Along with that, staff and students have been discussing what it means to be ready to learn in all areas of our school, including when we “Show 5.” You can keep the conversation going at home by asking your child how they’ve been “ready to learn” this week!

Beyond the classroom, students have been busy learning out in our community, too! Third graders enjoyed a walking field trip to Cushing Park, first graders explored downtown Delafield to connect their literacy unit to real life, and fourth graders traveled to Old World Wisconsin to experience what school and daily life were like long ago.

Safety Reminders for Bike Riders
Our friends at the Delafield Police Department have reported students riding their bikes to/from school and not stopping at Stop Signs/Intersections.

Parents/Guardians - please go over our guidelines for walking/biking to school with your student.  If additional reports of unsafe behavior occur, a student’s walking or biking privileges may need to be reconsidered.

Guidelines to follow when walking or riding your bike to and from school:

  • Student agrees to arrive no earlier than 8:25am

  • Student agrees to walk on the sidewalk on the west side of Genesee Street

  • Student agrees to obey all traffic rules and signals

  • Student agrees to lock bike to the bike rack

  • Student agrees that Cushing School cannot take responsibility for any damage to your property

  • Student agrees to meet a Cushing staff member in the library at dismissal time so that s/he can be safely escorted through the parking lot

The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. We thank you for your support and cooperation!

Wear Green on October 22 for Phelen-McDermid Syndrome Awareness Day

Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Awareness Day

On Tuesday, October 22nd, we will celebrate Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Awareness Day at Cushing by wearing green. Phelan-McDermid Syndrome is a rare genetic condition that involves chromosome 22, and can make learning, talking, and growing look a little different for some people. It’s extra special for us to recognize this day because someone in our own Cushing community has Phelan-McDermid Syndrome.

When we wear green, we show kindness, care, and support for our classmates, friends, and families—both here at Cushing and all around the world.

So don’t forget: wear green on October 22nd to show your support!

PTO

VOLUNTEERS

🚨 SOS! Calling all volunteers!
We’re looking for one (or two!) amazing people to help lead our Winter Event ❄️✨

We already have a wonderful committee, a solid blueprint from past years (that you can follow or tweak with new ideas!), and PTO board members to answer questions along the way - we just need someone to take the lead and help make it happen.

If you love organizing, spreading joy, and creating fun for our kids, this is your moment!  Please reach out ASAP - we can’t make the magic happen without you! 💙

Urgent! Without a lead in place soon, we won’t be able to host the Winter Event.

BOOK FAIR

Get ready—the Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! This is a great opportunity to build your child’s home library with new books they’ll dive into again and again.

The easiest way to let your child shop the Fair independently is by creating an eWallet. It’s easy to set up and easy for others to add funds.

Create an eWallet, and you’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to Share the Fair - the giving program that supports students at our school who need help buying books. Consider participating so that no child leaves the Fair empty-handed!

Here’s everything else you need to know about the Book Fair:

Dates:

October 28th: 9am to 4pm
October 29th: 9am to 4pm
October 30th: 11am to 7pm (open during conferences)

Location:
The Cushing Activity Center

For full details, and to create an eWallet, visit our school’s Book Fair homepage:
https://www.scholastic.com/bf/cushingelementaryschool2

More than ever, we need to get students reading. Studies prove* that children with more books at home have higher-level reading skills, and attain more years of education overall.

Volunteer

Lastly, this is a great opportunity to be a Book Fair volunteer ! When you give your time, it helps make our Fair an unforgettable reading experience where every purchase benefits our school directly.

Happy reading!
