MESSAGE FROM MRS. RACH

Hi Cushing families!

This week’s message contains a few school and district updates along with some highlights from this week at Cushing! This year, our citizenship focus is on building respect and belonging by practicing whole body listening and finding ways to leave things better than we found them; you can learn more about this in our weekly video message.

This update also introduces our Cushing Family Mentor Program, designed to help new families feel welcomed and connected. Finally, you’ll hear updates on district restructuring progress and the completion of our fall safety drills.

This week’s highlights include: 1st grade’s trip to Ebert’s Greenhouse, going green for Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Awareness Day, and a guest reader in Mrs. Horman’s class celebrating inclusion and kindness!

Safety Reminders for Bike Riders
Our friends at the Delafield Police Department have reported students riding their bikes to/from school and not stopping at Stop Signs/Intersections.

Parents/Guardians - please go over our guidelines for walking/biking to school with your student.  If additional reports of unsafe behavior occur, a student’s walking or biking privileges may need to be reconsidered.

Guidelines to follow when walking or riding your bike to and from school:

  • Student agrees to arrive no earlier than 8:25am

  • Student agrees to walk on the sidewalk on the west side of Genesee Street

  • Student agrees to obey all traffic rules and signals

  • Student agrees to lock bike to the bike rack

  • Student agrees that Cushing School cannot take responsibility for any damage to your property

  • Student agrees to meet a Cushing staff member in the library at dismissal time so that s/he can be safely escorted through the parking lot

The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. We thank you for your support and cooperation!

***DATE CHANGE*** KM Explore Information Night - November 19
Join us on November 19th at 6:00pm at the Dousman Elementary Library for a tour and overview. This evening is targeted towards parents. Visit our website for more information.

We serve students in 5K through 5th grade and will be located on the campus of Dousman Elementary and we follow five specific learning pillars:

  • Multiage Learning

  • Collaborative Teaching

  • Generative Curriculum

  • Place Based Learning

  • Habits of Mind

STUDENT SERVICES

Our Student Services lessons are led by our school counselor, Ms. Walker, and they help students build important social and emotional skills that support learning and friendships.

In our first unit, students learned how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal setting strategies. Each student in grades 1-5 set a personal executive function goal to practice every day. Ask your child how they’re working toward their goal! You can find their goal plan in their star folder.

Our next unit is all about problem solving! Students will learn ways to solve problems in kind, calm, and helpful ways. Each grade will explore lessons from Second Step that include how to recognize and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, think of solutions, explore outcomes, and pick a solution. Check out your child’s grade level Home Link to learn more and continue the conversation at home! Home Links: K5  1st  2nd  3rd  4th  5th

Students will also learn Kelso’s Choices, which teaches problem-solving strategies that build confidence and kindness. Students will be able to tell the difference between small/age appropriate problems they can handle on their own and big/serious problems that need an adult’s help right away. If a student encounters a small problem, they try two of Kelso’s Choices, such as talk it out or apologize, to try to solve the problem on their own. Students can always ask an adult for help.

If you’d like to connect about your child or learn more about our school counseling supports, please reach out to Ms. Walker at walkerd@kmsd.edu.

New Family Mentor Program
We are excited to welcome new families to Cushing! To help them feel welcomed, supported, and connected to our school and community, we will pair each new family with a mentor family through the Cushing Family Mentor Program. Together, we hope to make the transition smooth, friendly, and fun!

If you are interested in being a mentor family or are a new family, please complete the designated survey by Friday, October 31, 2025.

Mentor Family Survey

New Family Survey

How It Works

  • Each new family is paired with a mentor family.

  • Mentor families offer guidance, answer questions, and share helpful resources.

  • The program lasts through February 2026.

Simple Steps for Both Families

  1. Learn: View a 30-minute info session about how to be a great mentor or mentee.

  2. Connect: Mentor family reaches out with a warm welcome.

  3. Meet: Families meet in person at a meet and greet.

  4. Share: Mentor families provide helpful information about school routines, resources, and community events. New families ask questions.

  5. Check In: Stay in touch a few times during the year to answer questions and encourage participation.

  6. Include: Mentor families invite new families to join a school or community activity.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Walker at walkers@kmsd.edu.

Thank you for helping us make Cushing a welcoming and wonderful place for all!

BOOK FAIR

Get ready—the Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! This is a great opportunity to build your child’s home library with new books they’ll dive into again and again.

Volunteer

We still have plenty of spots that need to be filled. Be a Book Fair volunteer ! (click the link to sign up)  When you give your time, it helps make our Fair an unforgettable reading experience where every purchase benefits our school directly.

The easiest way to let your child shop the Fair independently is by creating an eWallet. It’s easy to set up and easy for others to add funds.

Create an eWallet, and you’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to Share the Fair - the giving program that supports students at our school who need help buying books. Consider participating so that no child leaves the Fair empty-handed!

Here’s everything else you need to know about the Book Fair:

Dates:

October 28th: 9am to 4pm
October 29th: 9am to 4pm
October 30th: 11am to 7pm (open during conferences)

Location:
The Cushing Activity Center

For full details, and to create an eWallet, visit our school’s Book Fair homepage:
https://www.scholastic.com/bf/cushingelementaryschool2

More than ever, we need to get students reading. Studies prove* that children with more books at home have higher-level reading skills, and attain more years of education overall.

Happy reading!
