MESSAGE FROM MRS. RACH

Our Buddy Class activity this week was a hit! Students built connections with their peers while also practicing communication and teamwork as they decorated kindness rocks together. As we continue our focus on fostering friendships and enhancing communications skills, we’ve identified some goals for students based on their age and grade level. Some of those goals include:

  • Share what makes a good friend.

  • Identify elements of a healthy friendship.

  • Increase positive connections with their peers.

  • Increase positive social skills to promote healthy friendships.

By focusing on friendship and communication skills over these next few weeks, we hope to equip students with the tools they need to form meaningful connections and navigate friendships. We encourage you to engage with your child in conversations about friendship and maybe even share some of your own childhood experiences with friendships.

Warm Fuzzies
We are excited to share our latest monthly focus here at Cushing: Kindness and Friendship. Throughout this month, our students are diving into the art of good communication and exploring what it means to be a great friend. We are encouraging our students to be observant and recognize those who go above and beyond in demonstrating kindness and empathy, just as they do with our "Galaxy Slips." To celebrate these acts of kindness, students and staff will be giving out "Warm Fuzzies" when they spot someone spreading positivity. These warm fuzzies are tokens of appreciation that we place in our individual classroom containers, with the goal of filling a larger school container as a community.

Ms. Wiseman, our school counselor, has created an explanatory video on this topic, which you can watch HERE. Let's continue to foster a culture of care and friendship within our school community!

Access KM Resources From Home
Not ALL screen time is created equal.  Strive for more time that is educational and requires creativity versus just consuming media.  Looking for ideas?  The same quality KM resources that your child uses at school are available to them at home.  Click HERE to learn what they are and how you can access them.

Contact Mrs. Klatt at klatth@kmsd.edu if you have any questions.

Guidelines for Keeping Sick Kids at Home
Students must be fever, vomit, and/or diarrhea-free for 24 hours without the use of medication before returning to school.

Menu Change - Monday, October 30
Choice #2 on Monday, October 30 will be a Cheeseburger instead of Grilled Chicken.  We will also have a Berry Cup instead of Sliced Strawberries.

Fall Spirit Day - Tuesday, October 31
Wear Black & Orange or dress up as your favorite character from a book. For the safety of our students, masks and/or pretend weapons are not allowed.

Cooler Weather
The cooler temperatures outside are a reminder that winter is right around the corner and that we need to start wearing layers of clothes to school. Please make sure that you start sending your child(ren) with a coat labeled with their name in case they forget it on the playground. Also, keep in mind that snow pants, boots, jackets, hats, and gloves will be needed in the near future when temperatures drop and snow is on the ground. Again, please make sure all outdoor clothing is labeled with your child(ren)'s name.

Veterans Day Concert - Friday, November 10
Cushing Elementary will host its annual Veterans Day Concert this year on Friday, November 10th at 2:00 p.m. in the Cushing Elementary gym.  Every year, students learn about the importance of Veterans Day and prepare a concert that honors the men and women of the armed forces. This year, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be performing in the concert.

The staff and students at Cushing would like to honor current and past service members related to our Cushing Star families during this year's concert. Please fill out THIS SURVEY if there is a Veteran or active service member you would like us to acknowledge during the concert. The survey will ask for this service member's name, rank, and branch as well as ask if this veteran will be in attendance and how many guests will be attending. If you include a picture of the Veteran, it will be used in our slide show.

Thank you to the Cushing community for continuing to support the men and women of the armed forces. We hope to honor as many Veterans as we can during our 2023 Veterans Day Concert. Please email Mrs. Post (postemilie@kmsd.edu) with any questions.

STUDENT SERVICES UPDATE

TIER 1 SUPPORT

In our last newsletter update, we shared that we would be continuing the discussion of Multi-Level Systems of Support (MLSS). Today, we will want to share specific information about Tier 1 supports. Tier 1 support refers to the first level of a multi-tiered system of support designed to promote positive behavior and academic growth at Cushing. Tier 1 support is universal and applies to all students within a school. The primary goal of these supports is to establish a foundation of proactive strategies and practices that promote positive behavior. We also have Tier 1 support for academics, which focuses on providing high-quality, research-based instruction and support to the entire student population to ensure that learners receive effective and adequate instruction to meet grade-level expectations.
