MESSAGE FROM MRS. RACH

Hi Cushing Families,

As we wrap up our first quarter of the school year, we're excited to share progress around two of our school goals that are shaping student success at Cushing.

Academic Growth Our academic growth goal centers around students meeting their growth targets in the area of literacy and math, based on fall data. To support this goal, our entire teaching staff along with other certified staff are engaging in professional learning around science-aligned literacy instruction as well as explicit and high leverage instructional practices. Students are engaging in whole group, small group and individual practice and teams regularly monitor their progress along the way.

Life Skills & Executive Functioning We recognize that strong organizational and self-management skills support academic success. Our staff have engaged in learning around life skills with a focus on planning and organization. The positive response from our staff has led us to plan additional staff learning. One key action step in this goal area is our school-wide Star Folder system. These folders serve as both an organizational tool and a bridge between school and home, helping students develop organizational skills while keeping families informed about their learning at Cushing. Our students have even created a video about planning and organization – demonstrating their engagement with these important life skills!

Some Ways You Can Support These Goals:

  • Review your child's STAR Folder regularly and talk with them about what they are bringing home/reporting home about

  • Read at home with your child(ren) and talk about what they’re reading

  • Practice math facts or play math games

  • Talk with your child about their organizational strategies

  • Stay connected with your child's teacher about both academic and life skills; conferences are a great opportunity for this!

We look forward to sharing updates about our other school goals in future editions of the Cushing Chronicles.

We’re thankful for your partnership!

Mrs. Rach

NATIONAL STRESS AWARENESS DAY - NOVEMBER 6

Stress Awareness Day

National Stress Awareness Day, observed on the first Wednesday in November, encourages us to identify and address the stressors in our lives. While some stress can motivate and protect us, excessive stress can negatively impact our health and relationships.

Recognizing the sources of stress—whether they stem from health issues, work/school environments, financial concerns, or family dynamics—is essential. By pinpointing these stressors, we can take steps to manage and reduce them.

Here are some effective tools for managing stress:

  • Develop Coping Skills: Practice techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness, or meditation to help manage anxiety.

  • Let Go of the Unchangeable: Focus on what you can control and try to release the rest.

  • Exercise Regularly: Physical activity helps release built-up tension and improve overall well-being.

  • Maintain a Balanced Diet: Eating nutritious foods can provide the energy and resilience needed to cope with stress.

Taking proactive steps on National Stress Awareness Day can lead to healthier, more balanced lives. Remember, it's okay to seek help if you're feeling overwhelmed.

BAKKUM'S BOOK RECOMMENDATION FOR NOVEMBER

Smart but Scattered
by Peg Dawson and Richard Guare

A fantastic resource! It offers practical strategies for helping children strengthen their executive skills, which are crucial for success in school and life. The insights for parents are especially valuable, as they can apply these techniques to support their children's development. Highly recommended for parents who have children ages 4-13.
