Hi Cushing Families!
I’ve been having some really good conversations with families around our new ELA curriculum, myView. Here in KM, we’re moving from a balanced literacy approach to a science-based approach to reading while using the myView curriculum. You might be wondering, what does the Science of Reading mean? The Science of Reading is a body of research regarding what works in literacy instruction. (NWEA 2022) It guides us around how we instruct reading and writing; essentially, it is the idea that decoding and language comprehension combine together to form reading comprehension. The visual below, is a graphic and mathematical representation of what that means:
Research shows that to be a strong reader at any age, it's important to be good at both recognizing words and understanding language. We’ll continue to share updates throughout the year. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out with any questions or if you’d like to chat more.
Enjoy your weekend!

Veterans Day Concert - TODAY at 2:00!
TODAY (Friday, November 10th), we are hosting our annual Veterans Day Concert at 2:00 p.m. in the Cushing gym.
Reminder: Students should wear Red, White, and Blue for the performance.
Families of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and Veterans (of any Cushing student) are invited to this program. Doors will open at 1:45.
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all, please note the following details about the event:
Post-Concert Plans: Parents are welcome to take their child(ren) home with them after the concert. To help us plan accordingly, please complete this Google Form to indicate your post-concert plans. Parents may also take younger siblings (4K-2nd grade) home after the concert. Filling out this form will be helpful in minimizing end of day / dismissal disruptions.
Space Limitations: Please be aware that this is a 3rd - 5th grade concert. We anticipate a full house with the possibility of standing room only. Your understanding is greatly appreciated.
Reserved Seats for Veterans: We will have a bank of seats reserved near the front of the audience to honor our veterans.
Thank you for your support and participation in making this event special. We look forward to celebrating Veterans Day with you and our talented students and dedicated staff.
Halloween Candy Drive
Please bring in your extra Halloween candy to school November 6-16. The Star Council Special Events Committee will have large donation bins by the front desk. If we can collect 2 bins full, all students will get to participate in a Buddy Recess. Dr. Michelle Kelly has offered to collect the candy in support of Move America Forward - a Halloween Candy collection program where local businesses accept excess Halloween candy from kids in exchange for goodies, once Trick-or-Treating season is over.

Are you a party planner? Do you love putting together fun events and meeting new Cushing families?
If you answered yes to either of these questions, please consider joining the Cushing Winter Event planning committee. We will meet 4 times from November to February to plan out and prepare an awesome family friendly event for all Cushing students and parents! Last year we put together a rocking winter dance and are looking to create another memorable and special event in February 2024!
Please reach out to AnnMarie Kreitzer (414) 721-6756 or amibis@hotmail.com! This is a fun, low commitment planning group!!!
