MESSAGE FROM MRS. RACH

I want to share a school-wide concept we use here at Cushing to support our students: the 5:1 positivity ratio. This research-based approach is an important part of our student support system and directly supports our school culture and connection goals.

Research shows that for every one correction or redirection a child receives, they need five positive "deposits" to remain confident, resilient, and positively engaged in their learning. These "deposits" are the small, everyday interactions that build a sense of belonging and safety.

You likely already do many of these at home! At Cushing, here are some things we focus on:

  • Specific Praise: Highlighting the "how" and "why" of a success (e.g., "I noticed how you kept trying even when that puzzle was tricky!").
  • Celebrating Small Wins: Recognizing effort and improvement, not just the final grade or achievement.
  • Reframing Mistakes: Viewing errors as valuable "learning moments" rather than failures.

By intentionally focusing on this 5:1 ratio, we ensure that every student feels valued and supported as their authentic self. We invite you to join us in practicing these "deposits" at home to help our Stars shine even brighter and to deepen connections. We appreciate your partnership!

Have a great weekend and Go Stars!

Mrs. Rach

Let’s Celebrate Reading - Spirit Days

Down Syndrome Awareness Day - "Rock your Socks"
Down Syndrome Awareness Day is March 21.  We’re going to celebrate on Friday, March 20!  Wear mismatched, brightly colored socks to celebrate the day! The shape of chromosomes resembles socks, and individuals with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome—symbolizing the "extra" sock in the Rock Your Socks tradition.

Family Support
As you may have heard, one of our families recently experienced a sudden loss with the passing of their father, James Cochrane.

To support the family during this difficult time, we are organizing a meal train to help lighten their load. If you would like to provide a meal or offer your support, please sign up using this Meal Train/Sign-Up Form.

Thank you for your kindness and for keeping the Cochrane family in your thoughts.

Forward Testing
Between March 16th and April 24th, 2026, Wisconsin students in grades 3-8 and 10 will take the WI Forward Exam, a state assessment that measures student learning in key subject areas. The test helps schools understand student progress based on Wisconsin Academic Standards in the following subjects:

- Grades 3, 5, 6, and 7 – English Language Arts (ELA) & Math
- Grades 4 and 8 – ELA, Math, Science & Social Studies
- Grade 10 – Social Studies

This exam is not factored into student grades, but it is used alongside other assessments to help educators structure instruction to meet student needs.

You can find more information about the Wisconsin Forward Exam here:
- Informational Brochure for Families
- Why Wisconsin Requires Standardized Testing

As we approach the Forward Exam testing period, we want to ensure that all our students are well-prepared and supported. If you have additional questions about your child’s grade level test schedule, please reach out to their classroom teacher.

A few reminders and tips for parents/guardians ahead of testing:

No Electronic Devices in Testing Environment: Please remember that electronic devices, including smartwatches, are not allowed in the testing environment to maintain fairness and integrity.

Option to Practice at Home: While teachers will provide practice tests in class, some students may benefit from additional practice at home. You can access practice materials here.

Encourage Restful Sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial for optimal performance. Please ensure your child gets enough rest in the days leading up to the test to help them stay alert and focused.

Healthy Eating Habits: Nutritious meals and snacks play a significant role in maintaining energy levels and concentration. Please provide balanced meals, especially on test days, to support your child's well-being.

Celebrate Effort and Manage Stress: Regardless of the outcome, celebrate your child's effort and hard work in preparing for the test. Your support and encouragement are invaluable. Encourage positive self-talk and maintain a positive attitude to help alleviate any stress.

Thank you for partnering with us to ensure our students' success.

STUDENT SERVICES

Child Protection Unit
The Second Step program is used in your child’s classroom during classroom counseling lessons. This program teaches children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. It also helps our school be a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.

To help make our school even more safe and supportive, we use elements of the Second Step Child Protection Unit. In these lessons, students learn three types of skills:

Personal Safety. Students will learn important safety rules, such as safety with guns, sharp tools, and fire, and when riding on wheels or in cars. They will also learn ways to help them decide if something is safe or not.

Touching Safety. Students will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and rules about touching private body parts. Private body parts will only be described as the areas that your swimsuit covers. We will not be using specific body part names. They will also learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touches, and to tell an adult if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.

Assertiveness. Students will learn the Recognize, Report, and Refuse model, practice asking an adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.

Your child will bring home activities and Home Links to help you understand what they are learning at school regarding safety. Please contact me if you have any questions about the Child Protection Unit. Thank you for helping us to make our school a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.

Sincerely,
Danielle Walker, School Counselor

KM CONNECTIONS

Over the course of this school year, our Cushing PTO facilitated all KM Elementary PTO Connections. Our goal was to learn more about our other KM elementary schools, forge connections as fellow parent volunteers and establish communication across all schools as we all navigate the transition of next school year. We have met some wonderful district parents and gathered information that has helped inform us on our priorities as we finish this school year and plan for the next

Please consider joining the Cushing Transition Committee to support our Cushing community and fostering connections across the district.

Zumba + Lift
All the fun of Zumba® with resistance training mixed in!  Zumba + Lift® blends the fun, low-impact dance fitness you love with simple strength training using light weights (about 5–10 lbs, though, this is up to you and your fitness level). We will alternate between Zumba® routines and dumbbell weight training throughout the entire class to build strength in our major muscle groups. Start with the weights that you feel comfortable with, and add additional weight over time. Please bring your own set of weights, either 2, 5, or 10 lbs. The goal of these classes is to get stronger in a progressive manner. Classes are held this spring on Tuesdays and Thursdays, sign up today at https://kmsd.revtrak.net/rwcommunityeducation/
