First Day Reminders
We try to mirror the first day similar to any other day at Cushing. Below are just a few notes to consider about the first few days of school.
We’re All in This Together!
Tuesday marks the first day of school for all of us, and we’re here to support each other. There will be plenty of Cushing staff available to assist students in finding their classrooms, navigating the carline, and helping with end-of-day transitions, especially for our younger students. If your child is new to Cushing, please reassure them that our staff and older students are ready to lend a hand. For those who have been with us for a while, encourage your child(ren) to welcome new faces and offer help to anyone who might need it.
NEW School Day Start & End Times
M, T, W, F = 8:35-3:40
Th (Early Release) = 8:35-3:10
Morning Routine
Establish a consistent morning routine to help your child feel ready for the day ahead. A good breakfast, a review of the day’s plan, and positive encouragement can make a big difference.
Transportation and After School Plans
Confirm your child’s transportation arrangements—whether they’re taking the bus, walking, or using car line. Make sure your child knows where to go and what to do at dismissal time as well.
Lunch and Snacks
Pack a healthy lunch and snacks that your child can easily manage. If your child is buying lunch, their classroom teacher will help them through the lunch line these first few weeks.
Label Belongings
Label all personal items, including backpacks, lunchboxes, jackets, and water bottles to help prevent them from getting lost. Cushing Lost and Found fills up quickly!
Bus Route
Bus route information can be found in Infinite Campus. If you have any questions about busing for your child, please reach out to Dousman Transportation directly.
Carline
The breakdown for carline is:
Last names A-M will utilize door 1
Last names N-Z will utilize door 2 (by the music room).
4K students will utilize Genesee St doors.
For more information, check out our Cushing Carline video. Below are just a few carline reminders to consider:
Visor tags have been distributed during Great Start Conferences.  You can also make your own - a sheet of paper with your LAST name in large letters.
Please display the visor tag at dismissal time to keep cars flowing smoothly.
Please pull as far forward as possible when you line up.
Parents should remain in the car pick-up line and patiently wait until a staff member directs your student to your vehicle.
Students should enter and exit the vehicle on the side that is closest to the building.
The more cooperation we have with the pick-up process, the smoother, quicker and safer the pick-up process will be.
Walkers/Bike Riders
Walkers/Bike Riders will meet up with a staff member in the library at dismissal. They will be safely escorted as a group to the bike rack and crosswalk.  Parents/Guardians who wish to walk/bike home with their student will wait for them at the bike rack.
All students who would like to walk or bike to/from school need to have a signed permission form on file in the office.  Click HERE for the form.
Blessings in a Backpack
Cushing partners with a non-profit organization called Blessings in a Backpack. Through this partnership, students are eligible to be a recipient of the Blessings in a Backpack snack packs.
The program is designed to provide non-perishable food every Friday to children who would benefit from supplemental nourishment over the weekend. The program runs the full 38-week school year and there is no cost to participate. If you choose to participate, your child will receive a bag of non-perishable food every Friday which will be distributed in a discreet and caring manner.
If you would like your child to participate, please email Mrs. Mirek (mireka@kmsd.edu).
Yearbooks
Click HERE to order your yearbook. All yearbooks will be handed out at school at the end of the year.  Please call/email Empire Photography if you have any questions.
School Pictures
If your child's picture was taken during our Great Start Conferences, you will receive an email from Empire Photography containing a link to your child’s private, PIN-protected gallery. If you do not receive an email, please check your spam folder and contact Empire Photography (608-257-2941) if you need assistance.
There is no obligation to order.  If you decide to order, you can complete your purchase for photo print and specialty products online. All photo orders will be mailed directly home to the address provided during checkout and will be shipped within 2-5 business days.
Volunteer Applications
All adults need to fill out a Volunteer Application to volunteer in the classrooms, chaperone field trips, join your learner for lunch, help with PTO-sponsored events, etc.  If you plan on doing any of these fun activities, click HERE.
Fun Fact: Volunteer Applications expire two years after approval.  If you have an approved application on file, you won’t be able to submit a new application until the current one expires. If you’re wondering if you have an active application on file, contact Mrs. Mirek.
Wizard of Oz - Looking for Munchkins!
This fall, KMHS is putting on The Wizard of Oz as their all-campus musical, and the director, Shelley Hooper, is looking to cast some District 4th and 5th graders as Munchkins! Students will be expected to complete a full audition on Tuesday, September 9th, and the audition materials are attached here and the QR code.
If families have questions, please email Mrs. Hooper at hoopers@kmsd.edu or Mrs. Hassemer at hassemerc@kmsd.edu.
