MESSAGE FROM MRS. RACH

We had a great first week at Cushing and are thrilled to see everyone back after summer!
We've been reconnecting with familiar faces, building new relationships within our school community, and learning about our school-wide expectations. We've even had the chance to visit all of our specials classes!

At Cushing, we're aligning our efforts with KM’s new strategic plan and have set several school-wide goals. The focus of these goals range from academic achievement to life skills. Below, you’ll find a message from our school leadership team about Star Folders, which explains how we’re helping students develop independence and self-management skills.

We’re excited about the work we’re doing as a school and look forward to sharing updates and celebrating progress throughout the year with you. It’s going to be a great year, and we’re incredibly thankful for the ongoing support of our families.

Shine on, Stars!

Mrs. Rach

CUSHING NEWS

We're aligning our efforts and school goals with Kettle Moraine’s updated strategic plan to enhance our focus on life skills among other areas. One of our school goals is to support students in developing independence and self-management.

Our school leadership team and teachers are enthusiastic about this initiative. One key action step that we’ve created as a school is teaching students strategies to improve organization and problem-solving skills.

This week, your child may have brought home what we're calling STAR Folders. These folders serve multiple purposes:

  • Communication with Families: Keeping you informed about your child's school day.

  • Student Ownership and Organization: Helping students manage their work and responsibilities.

  • Student Agency and Excitement: Encouraging students to take an active role in their learning.

Teachers will use these folders daily with students, at an age-appropriate level. Parents can expect the folders to come home at the end of every week for review and signature at home over the weekend; some some grades may send folders home nightly. We appreciate your partnership as we work together to support our work around these life skills.

FOUND: Shark & Mermaid Tails
Is anyone missing a shark and a couple mermaid tails?  We are hoping to find their home as it looks like a lot of time and love went into making these.  If they’re yours, contact Mrs. Mirek: mireka@kmsd.edu

Shark and Mermaids

Homecoming Week: September 23-27

Monday, September 23 = Pajama Day
Mondays are tough.  Stay in your pajamas.

Tuesday, September 24 = Crazy Socks Day
The crazier your socks are - the better.

Wednesday, September 25 = Class Colors Day
Dress in your grade’s color and let’s see what grade has the most spirit!

4K = Red
5K = Orange
1st = Yellow
2nd = Green
3rd = Blue
4th = Purple
5th = Black

Thursday, September 26 = Mismatch Day
If you have a child who likes to dress themselves, this is the day where their outfit selection is a-ok.

Friday, September 27 = KM/Cushing Spirit Day
Show your Kettle Moraine/Cushing Pride by wearing your KM/Cushing gear!  Play a sport for KM? Wear YOUR team jersey!  Don’t have any spirit wear?  That’s ok!  You can wear Navy and Gold instead!

Blessings in a Backpack
Cushing partners with a non-profit organization called Blessings in a Backpack. Through this partnership, students are eligible to be a recipient of the Blessings in a Backpack program.

The program is designed to provide non-perishable food every Friday to children who would benefit from supplemental nourishment over the weekend. The program runs the full 38-week school year and there is no cost to participate. If you choose to participate, your child will receive a bag of non-perishable food every Friday which will be distributed in a discreet and caring manner.

If you would like your child to participate, please email Mrs. Mirek (mireka@kmsd.edu).

Yearbooks
Click HERE to order your yearbook. All yearbooks will be handed out at school at the end of the year.  Please call/email Empire Photography if you have any questions.

School Pictures
If your learner’s picture was taken during our Great Start Conferences, you should receive an email from Empire Photography containing a link to your child’s private, PIN-protected gallery. If you do not receive an email, please check your spam folder and contact Empire Photography (608-257-2941) if you need assistance.

There is no obligation to order.  If you decide to order, you can complete your purchase for photo print and specialty products online. All photo orders will be mailed directly home to the address provided during checkout and will be shipped within 2-5 business days.

Volunteer Applications
All adults need to fill out a Volunteer Application every year.  These applications are required to volunteer in the classrooms, chaperone field trips, join your learner for lunch, help with PTO-sponsored events, etc.  If you plan on doing any of these fun activities, click HERE.

Fun Fact: Volunteer Applications expire one year after approval.  If you have an approved application on file, you won’t be able to submit a new application until the current one expires. If you’re wondering when your application expires, contact Mrs. Mirek.

PTO UPDATES

GET READY FOR CUSHING'S 12th ANNUAL DECATHLON!

Decathlon

New Date: Wednesday, October 9   |    Rain Date: Thursday, October 10

Cushing's Annual Decathlon is a field day filled with fun, friendship and community, and it is our school's ONE, big fundraising event to support fun and learning throughout the school year.

We are asking that each student set a goal of at least $50, so we can work as one team to meet our goal of $25,000.

We have numerous fundraising levels for both families and businesses to support our efforts, as well. This is a great opportunity to ask family and friends to contribute or utilize a company match program, especially because this is our ONE ASK during the school year. Reaching our Decathlon goal ensures we don't need the ancillary fundraisers anymore - pretzels, wrapping paper, coffee, movie passes, etc. where we are often asking friends and family to buy items many times throughout the school year.

Click HERE to donate online.  Click  HERE  for the donation form.

CUSHING SPIRITWEAR
