November Brain Superpower |
This year, students will be learning about the eight key Executive Functions, or Brain Superpowers, as well as grit. These brain superpowers are Self Control, Emotional Control, Flexible Thinking, Working Memory, Self-Monitoring, Planning and Prioritizing, Task Initiation, and Organization.
We celebrated a student from each class who showed emotional control and grit for October. Here are the students who were recognized in our monthly assembly:
Mrs. Siems - Lila Ms. Strenke - Abel Mrs. Linn - Drake
Mrs. Fab - Scarlet Ms. Myers - Mackenzie Mrs. Ryan - Abby
Mrs. Lenske - Roni Mr. Sobotka - Riley Mrs. Kreif - Elissa
Mrs. Strom - Avery Mrs. Gross - Quinn Mrs. Wicke - Ava
November’s focus is on using Flexibility and Grit. This superpower includes:
|
- Transitioning smoothly between activities.
- Adapting to changes in plans or schedules.
- Trying new approaches when something doesn’t work
|
Speak with your child about the following visual and help them build healthy habits around emotional control. |
How to Help Kids Develop Grit |
-
Let Kids Choose Their Passion - Children are more motivated when pursuing something they care about, not something chosen for them.
-
Encourage Challenges - Help kids try things outside their comfort zone to build confidence and resilience.
-
Allow Frustration - Don’t rush to fix things. Let children struggle and push through difficulty — it builds resilience.
-
Model a Growth Mindset - Teach that effort leads to improvement. Avoid fixed mindset language like "You're just not good at this."
-
Brainstorm Solutions Together - When kids want to quit, talk through options and strategies with them — but let them take ownership.
-
Normalize Failure - Share your own failures and how you overcame them to show that failure is part of learning.
-
Focus on Effort, Not Just Results - Praise hard work and perseverance, not just accomplishments. Celebrate attempts and progress.
-
Be a Gritty Role Model - Show kids how you face challenges and bounce back. Encourage, support, and coach — but don’t control.
|
Bottom Line
To build grit in children, let them struggle, support their passion, model resilience, and praise effort over outcomes. Your example and guidance shape their mindset for life.

Dear Parents of K-3 Students,
On Friday, December 12, Dousman will host local children's author Diane Nienas for Grades K - 3 (another author is coming in February for grades 4-5).
Diane, a Pewaukee resident, is the creator of the Living Life with Leo series—a #1 Amazon best-selling children's book collection.
Her presentation to our K-3 graders will cover her creative process: dreaming up, writing, illustrating, and publishing stories based on her son, Leo. Leo is a curious, joyful boy who uses a wheelchair, and Diane's visit is a wonderful opportunity to discuss imagination, writing, and inclusivity.
If you would like to order autographed copies of her books, please watch for the official book order form, which should be in this week's Friday folder. If you would like to order any book/s for your child, please send the order form and money to school by Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Mrs. Leah Scheid Dousman Librarian

Dear Dousman Families:
Conflict or disagreements are normal and often happen when children get together. However, hurtful words, gestures, or physical attacks are unacceptable ways to deal with conflict at school.
Our goal is to teach students several positive ways to deal with these difficult situations. I am teaching Kelso’s conflict management skills to help students solve minor problems in our Problem Solving Unit.
Go to another game or activity Talk it out Walk away Ignore the problem behavior Tell them to stop Apologize Make a deal or compromise Wait and cool off Share and take turns
As students reach 4th grade, they learn to differentiate the verbal choices from the nonverbal choices. Also, students are no longer asked to share and take turns to solve minor problems as they have generally mastered this skill.
By using Kelso the Frogs Conflict Management skills, students will develop effective ways to problem-solve. The skills will help students deal with conflict in a positive manner and to make appropriate decisions.
Attached below is a colorful wheel that we have in classrooms and around the school. We encourage you to use Kelso’s conflict management skills at home. By working together we can develop healthy life skills for our children to use at home and at school. As always you can contact me at poasta@kmsd.edu with any questions or concerns.
