PATRIOT DAY AND NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE - September 11

Each year Americans dedicate this day to remembering those who died and the first responders who risked their own lives to save others during the 9/11 attacks.

Tomorrow marks two decades since the day that changed our lives forever. On September 11, 2001, each of the World Trade Center towers was struck and fell, the Pentagon military headquarters was struck by a plane, and Flight 93, which was believed to be headed to the Capitol building in Washington D.C, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after being hijacked. The combined attacks killed nearly 3,000 people from 93 nations.

These four coordinated terrorist attacks were determined to have been planned and carried out by al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group. The terrorists did not have the capacity to destroy the United States militarily, so they set their sights on symbolic targets instead in the hopes that, by attacking these symbols of American power, they would promote widespread fear throughout the country and severely weaken the United States’ standing in the world community.

Terrorism is not an easy topic to think about, let alone discuss. However, as stated on the website 911memorial.org, “Despite our shared grief in the aftermath of 9/11, hope, resilience, and unity lifted us up as a nation. Twenty years later, these lessons are more important than ever. Today, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum stands as a beacon of healing and renewal – a physical embodiment of the compassion we showed to one another, the resolve we demonstrated to the world, and how, in the face of unfathomable loss, we rose as one.”

We take today and this weekend to remember the nearly 3,000 citizens who passed away on 9/11, those citizens who passed away in the months and years following the attacks due to injuries and exposure to the attacks, the over 7,000 US soldiers who passed away, and the over 52,000 US soldiers who were injured during our nation’s 20-year long campaign to fight terrorism worldwide. At some point this week please watch a documentary on 9/11, visit the 9/11 memorial website, talk to your parents/relatives who lived during the 9/11 attacks, or pay your respect to those who passed away.
