Yesterday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States. This federal holiday takes place on the third Monday of January each year and honors the legacy of Dr. King, who was in many ways the leader of nonviolent protests during the American Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King protested racial discrimination and advocated for equal rights for people of all races. His “I Have A Dream” speech from 1963 is one of the best-known speeches of all time and described Dr. King’s hopes for an America in which people are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Dr. King was assassinated in 1968 at the age of 39, but his legacy lives on today.
If your student was unable to attend one or more classes on Friday due to power or internet issues, please contact the KMMS office as soon as possible to excuse your student’s absence(s).

It’s a great day to be a Laser, when we treat one another well. Good morning KMMS students and welcome back after a day off yesterday and a virtual day of learning last Friday. It is great to see our students back in the building.
Kettle Moraine Middle School has been unique in offering multiple learning environment choices, or three houses. As you probably already know, we will no longer have three options moving forward and instead will have two. This change is taking place because the company who runs the Summit platform is eliminating it. So what does this look like for KMMS students next year?
Instead of Create, Discover, and Navigate, there will be Create and one other house that combines the previous Discover and Navigate houses. Yes, that means Navigate and Discover students will have more classes with one another next year.
As we make these changes, we really want feedback from you, our students. During Laser Hour this week your teachers are going to issue you a short survey that asks you a few questions. Here are a few things to consider while taking the survey:
Your email address is being collected so we can follow up for further information if needed. That means your survey responses are not anonymous. Please take the survey seriously.
Know the audience. Teacher teams and administration will be reviewing your feedback. The feedback matters to us. Please take the survey seriously.
8th graders, although you will be gone next year, your feedback based on your three years here at KMMS is extremely valuable to us.
You will be voting on the name of the new house that combines Discover and Navigate. There are four choices of names. Three of the choices are based on the new purpose statement of KMSD - Prepare, Inspire, or Empower. One choice is similar to Kettle Moraine High School, which has multiple learning environments - HS2, Perform, Global and Legacy. Legacy is what they call the conventional KMHS environment and would be the customary middle school environment. We want you to have a say!
Kettle Moraine Middle School is one of the best middle schools in the state. While we will have some changes next year, we will no doubt continue to have a great school where teachers provide a high quality education and students learn to grow and to prepare for life after middle school. No matter the changes, it will be a great day to be a Laser. Thank you for your time and consideration with the survey.
It’s a great day… to be a LASER!
