Judy Heumann is considered the “Mother of the Disability Rights Movement” because of her decades of work to make sure people with disabilities have a high quality of life, both in America and around the world. Heumann had the disease polio as a young toddler and spent most of her life using a wheelchair. In the early 1970s, she became the first public school teacher who used a wheelchair in New York City. She later served under President Clinton and President Obama as the first Special Advisor for International Disability Rights. Judy Heumann passed away in 2023 after a life of fighting for equality for people with disabilities.
A couple of coding club meetings ago, a classic game combination challenge was announced. Members would spin a wheel that would decide two classic games, after that they would have to come up with a unique way to combine the two games into one. Yesterday the submissions were judged by the 8th grade team and the winner was determined to be Mason V. Although there were many great submissions, his game combining Centipede and Punch Out stood out as the most creative, fun, and functional. Congratulations Mason!

Did you know...
There are 35 million amputees and disabled people worldwide who need prosthetic devices but do not have access to them?
Traditional prosthetic legs cost between $10,000-$25,000 -- an unattainable price for someone making $3 per day
8th graders in Healthy & Active Lifestyles are participating in a Virtual 5K to raise awareness for Hope to Walk. Hope to Walk is a non-profit organization that helps the impoverished people of the world. Millions of amputees worldwide depend on wheelchairs and crutches. Some are even forced to crawl simply because they cannot afford prosthetics. Please consider donating. Go to https://hopetowalk.networkforgood.com/projects/203726-kelly-weske-s-fundraiser for more details and to make a donation.
Last year, students raised enough money to purchase a prosthetic leg for Santos, a 61-year old man from Honduras. Our goal this year is to raise enough money to purchase TWO prosthetic legs and we are just $130 away from hitting that goal!
The KM Forensics Speech Team, where students speak with conviction, meets on Wednesdays after school in Room 603 until 4 pm. Popcorn and hot chocolate will be served.
