Kettle Moraine Middle School
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Ira Hayes was a Native American man and a US Marine who served during World War 2. Hayes is best known for being one of the flag raisers seen in the famous photograph “Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima,” taken on February 23, 1945. After serving the United States in World War 2, Hayes appeared as himself in the movie “Sands of Iwo Jima,” starring John Wayne. Sadly, after bravely and faithfully serving this country, Ira Hayes had a tragic ending to his story. Hayes suffered from alcoholism and apparent PTSD, expressing feelings of guilt for surviving a war that claimed the lives of many of his courageous brothers in arms. Ira Hayes passed away much too young, at the age of 32. Today we remember Ira Hayes, and we hope that his service inspires feelings of gratitude.
