In our last announcement, we learned that February was chosen as Black History Month in part because it is the birth month of Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass was born a slave in the state of Maryland, but escaped from slavery by boarding a northbound train when he was 19 or 20 years old. Douglass spent the rest of his life working as an abolitionist and social reformer who wanted to end slavery and achieve equal rights for African Americans in the 1800s. Many people who supported slavery at the time believed that slaves weren’t smart or skilled enough to function in American society. Douglass, a powerful speaker and writer, clearly proved this belief wrong.
Laser Ladies of STEM met last week and around 120 girls built and raced electric cars. The races were incredibly exciting and we're pleased to announce our winners. Tied for 3rd place were Stella W and the Alyssa/Brianna N sisters. An impressive second place finish was achieved by Colette H. And winning the rocket replica in first place is Julia B! Congratulations to all of you for your successful build and to our winners.
The KM Forensics Team, where students speak with conviction, competed last Friday in our second meet at Silverbrook Intermediate School in West Bend. The team came away with 14 medals, a team record.
