A MESSAGE FROM YOUR COUNSELORS

The monthly focus for March is “Safe & Responsible.”  Remember that we use our partnerships to help keep KMMS safe.  Each student should have a partnership with a trusted adult, whom they can contact if there is a safety concern.  Students have partnerships with one another that they can use to encourage responsible behavior.  Finally, we all have a partnership with our School Resource Officer, Deputy Cattani, who is reachable in person or through SUSO to report dangerous or illegal situations.

We want to take a moment to emphasize that safety is a serious topic.  When students joke about bullying, fighting, or other unsafe behaviors, it is unhelpful to staff members trying to keep the building safe.  These types of jokes could include misusing SUSO or shouting, “He’s bullying me!” in the hallway as a staff member walks past.  Joking about these topics disregards the serious impact that they can have on students.

If you have a genuine safety concern about one of your peers, remember to follow the ACT acronym.  ACT stands for acknowledge, care, and tell.  Step one is to acknowledge that you are concerned about your friend.  This could look like saying, “Your situation sounds serious.  I’m worried about you.”  The second step is to care, which involves telling your friend out loud that they matter to you, you want them to be safe, and you’re going to help them get in touch with a trusted adult.  The last step is to tell a trusted adult.  In the best case scenario, you would go with your friend and support them while you talk to a trusted adult together.  If your friend isn’t willing to go to an adult with you, then you should still report your safety concern to an adult on your own.
Each KMMS student can help to keep our school safe by making responsible choices and encouraging others to do the same!  It’s a great day to be a Laser, when we’re Safe & Responsible!

It’s a great day… to be a LASER!
