In the United States, Memorial Day takes place on the last Monday in May. Memorial Day is a federal holiday on which we honor and mourn those who have lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and placing a flag on the graves of military personnel. There are more than 170 national cemeteries in our country, and two of them are located in Wisconsin: Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee and Northwoods National Cemetery near Rhinelander. President Harry S. Truman said it best: "Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices."
Student Senate is hosting the final blood drive of the year on May 28th. Sign up now as this had been rescheduled and we have many spots available. We need your support! https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/drive-results?zipSponsor=KMHS
Several students from Mrs. Gehrke's Literacy class are collecting donations to local nonprofits as part of their passion projects. Please look in the front entry hallway to find boxes where you can drop off items for HAWS, the Hope Center, or a local women's shelter! Items needed include hygienic items, water bottles, garbage bags, pet food, paper towels, and many more. Check the boxes and posters in the front entryway for a full list! Thank you for considering supporting these great causes.
However, students will be able to check out books the last week of school if they participate in our summer reading program with a permission slip signed by a parent/guardian and returned to the MS Library by June 3. Forms are in the library.
7th graders are invited to apply to be WEB leaders for next year’s WEB activities. We are looking for students who have a positive attitude about KMMS and enjoy building relationships and encouraging others. Applications are available from 7th grade teachers or in the office. WEB leaders must be available for training day, August 28th and WEB day, August 29th, 2024. Applications are due Thursday, May 30th. If you have questions about WEB, please contact Mrs. Olson or Mrs. Hoffman.
Learning lab is on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:45 - 4:00 in the library. All students not going to the Learning lab must have rides arriving prior to 3pm. Only those students may wait in the vestibule just inside the front doors.
Time to celebrate the end of another successful school year! All KMMS families and current 5th Grade KM families are invited to the KMMS PTO second annual Summer Kick Off Bash where there will be concessions, kickball, yard games, a bounce house and a silent auction with music provided by DJ Otto. NEW THIS YEAR - Take a turn at dunking an 8th grader in our Dunk Tank!
In order to make this a successful community event, we need your help! Please consider signing up for a volunteer slot (most are only 1/2 hour!) and then hang out at the Bash with your family and friends for the remainder of the event. Here is the link for the sign up genius.

As we approach Memorial Day, I want to take a moment to reflect on what this special day means and how it can inspire us to treat each other with kindness and respect.
Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to our country. They fought to protect the freedoms and values we hold dear, and their courage reminds us of the importance of unity, respect, and compassion.
In our school and community, we can honor their memory by striving to live out these values every day. This means treating each other with kindness and understanding, even when we have differences. Here are a few ways we can do this:
Show Respect: Respect is the foundation of all positive relationships. Listen to others, appreciate their perspectives, and speak to them with kindness.
Be Compassionate: Take the time to notice when someone might need a friend or a helping hand. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's day.
Celebrate Diversity: Our differences make us unique and special. Embrace and learn from the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences of those around you.
Resolve Conflicts Peacefully: Disagreements happen, but it's important to handle them maturely. Use calm words and try to understand the other person's point of view.
Support One Another: Be there for your classmates and friends. Celebrate their successes and offer encouragement during challenging times.
By incorporating these values into our daily lives, we not only create a better school environment but also honor the legacy of those who have given so much for our country. This Memorial Day, let's remember their sacrifices and commit to building a community of kindness and respect.
Have a safe and meaningful Memorial Day!
It’s a great day… to be a LASER!
