Over this past weekend was Mexican Independence Day - September 16! Though Cinco de Mayo is often celebrated more in the US than September 16 is, the people of Mexico actually declared their independence from Spain on September 16, 1810. A priest named Father Hidalgo rang his church bell in Dolores, Mexico on September 16 and shouted a call to arms that sparked the Mexican War of Independence. Like the United States, Mexico had to fight a long and difficult war against a European nation (in Mexico's case, that nation was Spain) to win their independence as a nation. And, like the United States, many people in Mexico celebrate their independence day with fireworks, flags, and parties.
