It is a great day to be a Laser, when we are treating each other well. Good morning KMMS students, and happy Friday.
Mrs. Lloyd and I never want these Friday messages to sound like lectures or scolding you. These Friday morning messages are intended to give you information to empower you to use good judgment and to be successful in school.
The purpose of this Friday morning message is to make sure everyone is clear on our technology acceptable use policy, KMORR policy 3501, and to hit on a few key points about how it relates to treating other people well.
Here are some important things to know:
Your email is monitored by a system called BARK. BARK will send us reports based on inappropriate language or content in your email.
Your web searches are monitored by a system called SECURELY. SECURELY will send us reports based on inappropriate or unsafe web activity.
Please know that these systems are not for us to run unnecessary surveillance on you. Having secured networks and proper supervision and monitoring is required in schools by Wisconsin state law.
Your email is intended for academic purposes only. Emailing and Spamming friends can result in losing your access to technology while in school.
Treating other people well is also critical and expected when you are interacting online. Here is specific language from KMORR Policy 3501 about cyberbullying -
Cyberbullying will not be tolerated. Harassing, denigrating, impersonating, outing, and cyberstalking are all examples of cyberbullying. Don’t be mean. Don’t send emails or post comments with the intent of scaring, hurting, or intimidating someone else. Engaging in these behaviors, or any online activities intended to harm (physically or emotionally) another person will result in severe disciplinary action and loss of privileges. In some cases, cyberbullying can be a crime. Remember that your activities are monitored and retained.
Here are some examples of acceptable uses that helps promote treating others well:
I will:
Follow the same guidelines for respectful, responsible behavior online that I am expected to follow offline.
Treat school resources carefully, and alert staff if there is any problem with their operation.
Encourage positive, constructive discussion if allowed to use communicative or collaborative technologies. (Email and Google Docs would be two examples)
Alert a teacher or other staff member if I see threatening/bullying, inappropriate, or harmful content (images, messages, posts) online.
Use school technologies at appropriate times, in approved places, for educational pursuits only. (Your technology use should not disrupt the learning of other students)
Again, this is not to lecture you, but to make sure you know this information so you can make informed decisions when using your technology in school and to be cognizant of how you are treating other people. Remember, it’s a great day to be a Laser, when we are treating each other well. Have a great Friday, middle school Lasers.
It’s a great day… to be a LASER!
