Principal's Post

Greetings KMMS parents,

The purpose of this message is to provide a summary of the parent survey results from last month and information about important upcoming dates. On December 11, 2023, parents received a second communication about the Summit platform dissolving and anticipated changes to the KMMS learning environment structure. The communication included a short survey for parents. Here are common themes from that survey:

Purpose of the survey
The purpose of the survey was to receive feedback on the strengths of their child’s learning environment and areas of improvement from parents’ perspectives.

Participation
We received 105 survey responses.

  • 60 Navigate parents

  • 31 Discover parents

  • 14 Create parents

Common Themes

Create

Areas of Strength: multi-age, learn at own pace, relationships with same teachers all three years, flexible environment

Areas of Improvement: time spent with students outside of Create, clear and direct expectations, clear deadlines

Discover

Areas of Strength: blend of teacher-led/student-directed, clear expectations

Areas of Improvement: more pen and paper learning, more flexible

Navigate

Areas of Strength: development of independence, time management, prioritization skills, goal-setting

Areas of Improvement: more pen and paper learning, more blend of teacher-led/student-directed learning

Ongoing and Next Steps

  1. Students took a survey the week of January 15th  to provide learning environment feedback.

  2. Teacher teams are in the process of a learning environment audit.

  3. Grade-level teams will develop an environment philosophy that adopts the “best of both worlds” between Discover and Navigate.

  4. KMMS administration will work with the KMMS Family Advisory Committee on key findings and communication strategy.

  5. Staff is participating in K-12 curriculum review cycles to align content areas.
