Principal's Post

Hello KMMS families,

During the week of May 6-10, 2024, we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. It’s a time to express our gratitude for the incredible people who have dedicated their lives to preparing the next generation.

In these final weeks of the school year, we invite families, students, and communities to take some time to reflect on everything our teachers have done and continue to do to support our students. Let’s show them our appreciation as we celebrate public education and its critical role in our society.

Teaching is a challenging and demanding profession, requiring patience, dedication, and a deep commitment to students' growth and wellbeing. Teachers also play a critical role in shaping the future of our society by preparing, inspiring, and empowering our students to be successful, well-adjusted adults.

Now more than ever, our teachers need us. Let’s give them the resources, appreciation, and support as they work to ensure students can succeed and thrive.

Join us in celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week by taking a moment to thank a teacher who has made a positive impact on your life or the life of your child. Write a heartfelt note, send an email, or make a post on social media expressing your gratitude.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Matt Kitzerow

7th Grade Science: Guest Speaker

Seventh grade students have been learning about their body systems through labs, interactive demos, models, readings, and now dissection! Mrs. Wroblewski's and Mrs. Kobus' students are currently learning about the circulatory system, and what better way than dissecting a real heart. Ms. Kiely Page, from Boston Scientific, volunteered this week to lead the students through their first dissection of pig hearts. Kiely sells cardiovascular devices and is in surgery with doctors instructing them how to use stents and other devices.  Kiely taught students the anatomy of the heart, blood flow, main arteries, and the nuances of cardiology. Students were excited to learn how to dissect, were able to touch all four chambers, got to identify the aorta and vena cava, plus learned what medical fields are possible. We are so thankful for Ms. Kiely Page's expertise and for her mom, Mrs. Kelly Page, for helping us to connect. This was great dissection practice for students since they will later dissect a frog as a culmination project of their Human Body unit.

Student Quotes on Pig Heart Dissection:

-I thought it was gross because I'd never seen a pig heart before, and you can see all of its atriums and other muscles. But I want to get used to seeing those things because I want to be a nurse when I get older.

-I thought it would be disgusting but it turned out to be fine and I heard my own heart pumping while I was feeling the pig's heart.

-I loved dissecting the pig’s left atrium and cutting an artery.

-I had a lot of fun, and having the heart in front of us was a great way to visually understand how the heart works. I also loved cutting into it with the scalpel.

- I think I might join HS2 'cause this project is pretty fun, and I am interested in science.

May is Mental Health Month

Logo for Mental Health

Week of May 6-10

This week’s focus is on resources to help children and teens build resilience, self-care strategies, and skills for managing life stressors in healthy ways.

Supportive families, communities, and resources can help youth build strong foundations for lifelong well-being.

  • By teaching children and teens coping skills, we can empower them to take charge of their mental health.

  • Know the signs of mental health issues in children and teens. Early diagnosis and treatment can save lives.

  • Start the conversation early: talking about mental health can help children and teens build coping skills and feel comfortable with their emotions.

  • Nurturing relationships and environments are important for helping children and teens develop good mental health and manage life stressors in healthy ways.

  • Good mental health increases the ability of children and teens to practice self-care and face challenges with resilience.
