Principal's Post

Hello KMMS families,

How should a school in the year 2023 balance traditional instruction with new-age technology which students will use in future jobs? This is a question we tackle each day and in every subject area. It would not be wise for us to abandon effective methods that have worked for many years. It would also be a disservice to our students to not put technology in their hands and teach them how to build skills that will be necessary in future employment.

Our 2023-24 Academic Excellence goal is focusing on vocabulary. There are infinite benefits of strengthening our students’ vocabulary. This focus will help them interpret unfamiliar words, increase reading comprehension, improve reading scores, and improve learning in all subject areas. Some of our explicit vocabulary instruction this school year may look and feel more like what we remember in middle school. It will incorporate effective methods that have worked for many years like learning prefixes, suffixes, word origins, and word stems. And yes, your student will even have biweekly spelling tests with pen and paper!

On another note, our district is undergoing a strategic planning and visioning process. We ask that our families take a moment and provide their valuable feedback. Please participate before October 2, 2023, by clicking on the link below OR copy/paste it into your internet browser.

We fully understand that these few years at the middle school go by very quickly and there is no shortage of places to be or efforts to rally around. It has been humbling to consistently see our community so generously support our Teacher Appreciation efforts over the past year and during our recent drive. Our next area of focus is partnering with staff, students and of course, parents, to identify, fund and execute additional projects that serve our vision of exceptional students that are academically and socially prepared for the next step in life. As always, thank you for your participation and partnership.
