Students learned orienteering using a compass. They constructed shelters that would withstand wind, water, and provide warmth. They also built fires from gathered kindling and wood and learned basic fire safety. The unit was inspired by the book Hatchet, and applying that learning through real-world experiences was a valuable part of improving understanding.

Capturing KM – Magee Survival Skills
Magee Elementary Students spent the day with instructors, volunteers, and HS^2 students sharpening their survival skills in the outdoors while applying their learning in the classroom. The observations gained will be used to develop a survival guide that they will share with other classes.

The District Early Childhood Team facilitates a screening with a variety of play-based activities to assess communication, gross and fine motor skills, social/emotional development, and pre-academic skills. The KMHS Dance Team is hosting their annual Kid's Dance Clinic! This is for K-5 students. All dancers will get to learn a routine on January 17th, and perform it at a basketball game on January 19th. Wales/Explore Playground Available
As a fun New Year surprise, the new playground is able to be played on! There are a few aesthetic touches that still need to be done in spring, such as the "pour and play" flooring. There will be a "Play Party" at that time to celebrate the official opening. Until then, kids are allowed to play on the equipment and have had a great time exploring the new structures!

HS^2 Students Volunteer at Lapham Peak
HS^2 students assisted with conservation efforts at Lapham Peak, clearing woodlands of invasive plants and trees. "I thoroughly enjoyed working with them. They were respectful and very hard working," said Michael Neimon, a volunteer for Friends of Lapham Peak. "Normally, students are ready to leave in about two hours because it is a strenuous job. However these students worked twice that amount and more. Simply outstanding and a fine representation of Kettle Moraine High School." The area will likely be scheduled for a woodland/prairie burn within the next two years to help restore its natural beauty.

JUMP ROPE CLUBThe course will include learning to jump rope, skill challenges, team jump roping and at the conclusion of the course a jump rope show for parents. Course will focus on fun, exercise and learning new challenges. Course is intended for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. The jump rope show at the end will include a 1-3 min jump rope performance with a team to music. The students will be working on this throughout the course. Enrollment is limited.
