Six Lasers were awarded Gold Medals, including Jolie K., Anabelle G., Taylor A., Elsa K., Kassidy W., and Kristen M. Riley S. Emma M. and Jules H. secured Silver Medals, while Cass N., Ellen D. and Grey L. earned a Bronze Medal. 25 students received State qualifying scores, but best of all, every team member improved. Their sights are now set on the next meet in Slinger, Wisconsin.

Laser Ladies of STEM

Each year, Kettle Moraine Middle School holds an event for girls who are interested in STEM. The event, overseen by Denise Olson, organizes students into groups and assigns a task. The girls then select their materials and devise and build a system to attain that result as effectively as possible. At the end, their projects are tested to see which group obtained the best result. The event is a lot of fun, and it is wonderful to watch these young ladies working together to solve a problem. Watch for an upcoming Capturing KM on Laser Ladies of STEM!

Scholastic Art Awards

Sadie Groskruetz, in addition to winning a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art & Writing Contest, has been nominated for the National Scholastic American Visions Award for her piece "Mr. Fluff Butt". There are 250 nominees nationwide. From her artist statement: "I made this giant textured monster because I was in an art museum and was a little irritated that I couldn't physically touch and interact with any of the art. I wanted this to be a piece that promoted audience interaction with art. I want people to feel all the textures and fabrics and hopefully appreciate it with more than one sense. There is a 'Please Touch Me!' sign that goes with this piece, which ironically, the Museum chose not to include with the displayed piece." Each year, Wisconsin Regional judges select five superior works from the Gold Key winners as nominees for the American Visions Award medal. National judges then award one outstanding artwork from each regional exhibition. Sadie's piece is one of 5 pieces nominated from the Wisconsin Region. That is 1 piece out of 2500 (estimated), and 1 out of 150 Gold Keys awarded (top 1%).

Recycle Unwanted Plastic

Getting rid of all of the plastic bags, wraps, shipping materials, water bottles, and containers you've been holding onto is a win for you, KMHS, and the environment! KMECO's challenge goal is to collect 1,000 pounds of plastic in a year. If achieved, NexTrex will send our school a bench made from recycled materials! Three bins have been placed throughout the school with one right inside the building just beyond the front lobby entrance. KMECO believes #KMNation can rise to the challenge to help keep plastic waste out of landfills and create something functional in the process. If you have any questions contact Grayson Sikorski.
