Kettle Moraine School District Capturing KM - Railway Buddies

Magee's Railway Buddies program is a mentoring opportunity where older students develop friendships with their younger buddies.

All of our KM schools focus on collaboration and forming relationships. This is done within and between grade-level cohorts. It also extends to partnerships with students of different ages, and even different schools. The goal is to create a more cohesive culture. Railway Buddies is Magee's mentorship program that partners younger and older students within their school. Today we visited a 5K/5th grade group and a 1st grade/4th grade group. It was wonderful to see students growing as teachers and as learners!

KM EXPLORE CREATES THE KME OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT!!!

During a STEM activity, students were learning about angles of incidence and reflection using the "Design Process." This was illustrated by bouncing a ball off of an object to get it into a hole. In Explore, when someone suggests a cool learning exercise, the answer is almost always "yes!" So when students suggested they design a mini golf course, it was only a matter of time before they rolled up their sleeves and got to work! It was decided that the golf course's theme would be historical landmarks, which tied neatly into their literacy program. The students worked in groups to select a landmark to research and write about. Then, they drew their designs and built the holes. Once the course was completed, Explore families were invited to come and play. There were over 150 participants and it was a fun and interesting way to tackle complex concepts!

STORYWALK AT DOUSMAN IS INSPIRING YOUNG READERS!!!

Storywalk is an interactive adventure in our outdoor classroom that was created by Ms. Strenke's 5K class. The book will change about once a month to continuously introduce students to new experiences and adventures in reading. The current addition, Pumpkin Jack, tells the story of a pumpkin after Halloween. It is a wonderful science lesson that implements some great Habits of Mind. The kindergarten class also created their own Pumpkin Jack to study how he will decompose. The experiment is showing some new growth, and will produce Autumn yields.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Our Music Program is Multi-Faceted

The robust music curriculum in KM goes far beyond concerts and performances. A well-balanced music education requires students to undertake major academic work including deciphering a rich content-specific vocabulary, decoding music notation with fluency, speed, and accuracy, and analysis and application of expressive intent and contextual connections. In addition to the academic and performative skills that students develop through music participation, our KM students also apply their musical talents to serve the local KM community, in alignment with the Graduate Profile. Here you see middle school orchestra students undertaking a process known as 'score study'. After analyzing a piece of music as a group, students make determinations about whether the piece is appropriate for their ensemble. Students love to choose the music they study and perform!
