What a great start to the school year! Our first few days have been filled with opportunities to learn what it means to be a Cushing Star: Be Safe, Be Kind, and Do Your Job. Students are building new friendships, strengthening our sense of community, learning routines and expectations, and jumping into learning alongside their teachers and classmates. It has been exciting to see Cushing come alive with so much energy and enthusiasm!
We also know that the beginning of a school year can be a little bumpy as everyone learns new routines. Carline and end-of-day transportation have been one of those areas, and I’m happy to share that our procedures are running more smoothly each day. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and partnership as we continue to refine our routines and make dismissal as safe and efficient as possible.
As we head into the long weekend, thank you for helping make the start of this school year such a positive one. We are grateful to partner with you and are looking forward to all the learning, growth, and fun ahead this year. Have a wonderful long weekend, Stars! |

At Cushing, we have a tool that every student will use for communication between home and school called a Star Folder. These folders are part of our school-wide focus on helping students build independence, organization, and self-management skills that will serve them well now, and as they grow into responsible learners in middle school and beyond. Aside from communication, Star Folders also help to build: |

Student Organization & Responsibility: Students will learn to keep track of their work, routines, and responsibilities.
- Home Connection & Practice: Each week, students will bring home something to review or practice with you. This gives them a chance to share their learning and strengthen skills at home.

Encouraging Student Voice: The folder is also a place where students can take ownership and show pride in their learning.

Teachers will use these folders each day and will be sent home for families to look at together. We ask families to please take a few minutes to review the folder’s contents, sign it if needed, and talk with your child about what’s inside. We also encourage nightly reading together as a family and use of Bridges Home Connections. Whether your child reads to you, you read to them, or you share reading time side by side. This daily routine builds strong skills and creates wonderful opportunities for connection. As we start out the school year and welcome new students and families to Cushing, we want every family to feel a strong sense of belonging and connection to our school community. We know that creating a welcoming school is something we do together.

Cushing partners with a non-profit organization called Blessings in a Backpack. Through this partnership, students are eligible to be a recipient of the Blessings in a Backpack snack packs.
The program is designed to provide non-perishable food every Friday to children who would benefit from supplemental nourishment over the weekend. The program runs the full 38-week school year and there is no cost to participate. If you choose to participate, your child will receive a bag of non-perishable food every Friday which will be distributed in a discreet and caring manner. If you would like your child to participate, please email Mrs. Mirek (mireka@kmsd.edu).

All adults need to fill out a Volunteer Application to volunteer in the classrooms, chaperone field trips, join your learner for lunch, help with PTO-sponsored events, etc. If you plan on doing any of these fun activities, click HERE. Fun Fact: Volunteer Applications expire two years after approval. If you have an approved application on file, you won’t be able to submit a new application until the current one expires. If you’re wondering if you have an active application on file, contact Mrs. Mirek. |

Did you know?
The Wisconsin Poison Center, located in Milwaukee, provides 24-hour, toll-free poison information for all individuals in Wisconsin should they have contact with a substance that may be dangerous. The center’s nurses are ready to deal with accidental poisonings 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Poison Center was awarded national recertification by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. The AAPCC is the nationwide organization that sets standards and acts as the data repository for poison centers across the country. |

| Keep the following tips in mind when teaching your children about poisons: |
|
|
- Cosmetics, cleaning supplies and medicines can be harmful, even fatal, to curious children.

To alert your children to stay away from dangerous items, paste Mr. Yuk stickers on the items and explain that anything with the Mr. Yuk sticker on it is not to be eaten, smelled or touched.
- Mr. Yuk stickers work best when your children are with you when you put them on dangerous things.

In addition to being a good warning signal, Mr. Yuk stickers also have the emergency telephone number of Wisconsin Poison Center printed on them.

You may want to keep the Wisconsin Poison Center phone number (1-800-222-1222) handy by your home phones, too, in the event you need to call.

The Decathlon, our ONE, big fundraiser and fun-filled field day will be Friday, October 9th. It's time for all Cushing Stars to work together as each student aims to raise $50 towards our goal of $23,500. There will be fun incentives along the way.

Every Friday is “rock your Spiritwear” at Cushing Elementary! It’s a great way to support our school, as well as show off our Cushing pride! Junior Cup Golf Network
It’s called “Junior Golf Cup” and it’s a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization made up of NINE community based teams serving over 800 youth golfers! Arrowhead, Brookfield, Menomonee Falls, Germantown, Kettle Moraine, Mukwonago, Oconomowoc, Pewaukee & Sussex as well as a new “Open” tryout option for golfers that do not reside in one of the above districts. The Kettle Moraine team practices at their amazing indoor facility in Waukesha from January-April and participates in 5 matches against the above districts in April/May of 2027.
Kettle Moraine Junior Lasers Tryouts:
You’ll only need to attend 1 of the below tryout dates and specific tryout times will be communicated via email about 1 week prior to tryouts. Generally, tryouts take less than 30 minutes for each golfer to complete. MUST PRE-REGISTER using the link below.
