Principal's Post

Hello KMMS families,

We want to give a shout-out to our parents for the awesome attendance rate for our first three months of school! Our attendance rate was strong last year (94%) but is even stronger this year (95.5%). Thank you for making it a priority to have your students here… unless they have a fever or are vomiting!

Do you find yourself giving reminders to your children about things they should just know to do by now? Maybe it is a weekly reminder for the same chore that’s been their responsibility for over a year, or maybe it is three reminders to take out the one bag of garbage. We’re finding ourselves reminding our students here to clear the halls and not be tardy for their next class. Our 8th graders are needing a few more reminders. This morning’s principal announcement applauded our students’ attendance rate,  but also challenged our students to be on time. The message included why punctuality impacts other people, why it matters to employers, and how punctuality helps represent oneself in a very positive way. If you’re looking to check in with your student about their punctuality at KMMS, you could:

  1. Check Infinite Campus to see if they have any unexcused “tardies.” They are marked “TU.”

  2. Ask questions like:

    1. What passing time is the most difficult for you to be on time in 3 minutes? Why is that transition difficult? What can you do?

    2. Who or what is the most distracting to you during passing time?

    3. You had ___ tardies the first three months of school. What is your goal for December? What are you going to do to make it happen?

As always, your support is invaluable. Thank you for partnering with us.

Computer Science Happenings at KMMS

Mrs Olson's 7th grade Computer Science class focused on wiring circuits and programming Arduinos this past month. This group of students were able to meet the challenge of designing a pedestrian intersection with a push button and wire it up to function with their program. We then learned about electrician trades and electrical engineering jobs that might work on these types of projects. Take a close look at the picture to see the $100,000 bill they were paid with! Another student took a further step and wired up an LCD screen to display a message. Way to go 7th graders!

All School Assembly at KMMS

Tuesday, November 21st at the end of the school day, we held an all school assembly planned by the Student Senate. This was the first, all middle school assembly in more than ten years due to gym capacity issues. The Student Senate came up with a plan for grade level teams and a staff team to compete in familiar games for all to enjoy. The games included human Connect 4, Simon Says and Musical Dots. Students were encouraged to wear a color to designate their grade level during the games. The assembly was a fun way to send students and staff off to the holiday break. Thanks to the Student Senate for planning such a fun time for all.

SUPPLY DRIVE FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

KMMS Student Senate is sponsoring a supply drive for Children's Hospital, led by 8th grader Iris Fouts!  The purpose of this drive is to collect books, arts & crafts, and other activities for patients and family members of patients who are in isolation in the ICU at Children's. Here's what Iris had to say about it:
"I was inspired to start this supply drive because I have had the experience of being in the hospital over the holidays while my brother was receiving treatment in the ICU.  Being in isolation can be hard for siblings because we aren't allowed to do things that kids outside of isolation can do.  Because of this, I want to help make the holidays a little brighter for people in isolation."

Donated items must be NEW, less than 12" tall, and not homemade.  To make sure your item is acceptable, check out THIS list of requirements.

If you wish to donate an item, please place it in one of the labeled bins in the front hallway or the front office. The deadline to donate your items is Friday, December 8th.

From the KMMS Counseling Center

Greetings from the Student Services department!

During the month of September, all students were shown a brief video entitled "How to Make an Appointment with Your School Counselor."  Our counselors, psychologist, and social worker have an online form which students can access anytime to request an appointment, and they can also be reached via email.

Throughout the year, our student services team gets into classrooms to deliver lessons on topics such as bullying, substance abuse prevention, mental health, and future academic planning.  Our 6th graders started the year with lessons about bullying prevention, our 7th and 8th graders are currently receiving Mental Health lessons that teach them how to recognize warning signs of mental health concerns and how to get help, and they just finished up receiving lessons on the topic of Appropriate and Safe Technology Use.  This lesson includes material taken from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, as well as an examination of what our state laws and the Kettle Moraine Operating Rules and Regulations have to say about technology use among children.  The goal of this lesson is to promote appropriate digital interactions and how to respond if they encounter something inappropriate or problematic in their use of technology.

As always, if you are interested in viewing the material that is being discussed in the classrooms, please reach out to your child's counselor.
